Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek -γενής , -ist suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek -γενής (see -gen comb. form) + -ist suffix.Found in a number of formations in the 19th cent., chiefly after abstract nouns in -genesis comb. form or -geny comb. form.
1. Forming nouns (and corresponding adjectives) denoting an advocate of or expert in a theory or belief concerning the origin or development of life, as biogenist n., ontogenist n., polygenist n. and adj., etc.
2. Forming nouns (and corresponding adjectives) denoting an advocate or exponent of a particular practice or way of life, as miscegenist n. and adj., palingenist n.
