Etymology: < French pied d'éléphant (1949) < pied foot (see pied-à-terre n.) + de de prep. + éléphant elephant n. Compare earlier French patte d'éléphant flared trousers (1907), kind of bivouac sleeping bag (1935), pantalons à pied d'éléphant flared trousers (1837).Not fully naturalized in English.
Mountaineering.
A padded sack used to protect the lower part of the body when sleeping outdoors in a bivouac.
