单词 | pied piper |
释义 | Pied Pipern. 1. A piper in particoloured costume who, in a German legend, rid the city of Hamelin (Hameln) in Lower Saxony of a plague of rats by charming them into the River Weser with his music, and who, when refused the promised reward, lured away the children of the city in the same manner. The legend of the rat-catcher became associated particularly with Hamelin in the 16th cent., and relates to an event which allegedly occurred there in 1284. The retelling of the story by Robert Browning (see quot. 1842) ensured its widespread fame in English.
