Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: pheno- comb. form, thiazine n. at thio- comb. form 1.
Etymology: < pheno- comb. form + thiazine n. at thio- comb. form 1. With the form phenthiazine compare phen- comb. form. Compare German Phenthiazin ( A. Bernthsen Kurzes Lehrbuch der organischen Chemie (1896) 512; the word apparently does not appear in the edition of 1891; compare quot. 1894 at sense 1).
Chemistry and Pharmacology.
1. A yellow crystalline heteroaromatic compound, C12H9NS, whose molecule consists of two benzene rings joined by a sulphur atom and a nitrogen atom, and which is used in veterinary medicine as an anthelmintic.
