Etymology: < phi n. + beta n. + kappa n., after the initial letters of Greek ϕιλοσοϕία βίου κυβερνήτης ‘philosophy (the) guide of life’, the motto of the society (which was founded at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, in 1776).The phrase has not been traced in Greek authors, but compare ancient Greek ψυχῆς κυβερνήτης guide of the soul (Plato Phaedrus 247c).
