Origin: Of multiple origins. A borrowing from Latin. Partly also a borrowing from Italian. Etymons: Latin Pharisaismus; Italian Fariseismo.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Pharisaismus (1516 or earlier in Erasmus; < Pharisaeus Pharisee n. + -ismus -ism suffix); in quot. ?1573 at sense 1 via Italian Fariseismo (1546 in this sense in the passage translated; now usually farisaismo ; rare before 19th cent.). Compare Middle French, French Pharisaïsme (1541 in Calvin in sense 2, 1743 in sense 1). Compare slightly later Phariseeism n.
