Etymology: < Pharisee n. + -an suffix, with remodelling of the ending after -ian suffix or (in forms Pharisean , Pharizean ) after -ean suffix (compare also Pharisaean adj.). Compare Middle French, French pharisien (c1240 and 1256 in two apparently isolated attestations in Old French, subsequently from 1541). Compare earlier Pharisen n.
Scottish. Obsolete.
