Etymology: < Anglo-Norman flegmon and Middle French fleugmon, flegmon, phlegmon (c1240 or earlier in Anglo-Norman; French phlegmon ) and its etymon post-classical Latin phlegmon, phlegmone inflammation, inflamed tumour (from 4th cent.; in classical Latin as a Greek word, although see below) < ancient Greek ϕλεγμονή < ϕλέγειν to burn (see phlegm n.) + -μονή, suffix forming nouns.Classical Latin phlegmoni, dative of phlegmōn has been proposed as an emendation for flemini at Pliny Nat. Hist. 20. 24.

An inflammatory mass or localized area of inflammation; diffuse, spreading inflammation, often with suppuration, esp. of soft tissue; cellulitis.
