Etymology: < petty adj. + bag n., after Anglo-Norman petite bagge (see petit adj.). Compare petit bag n. at petit adj. and n. Compounds 1.Compare post-classical Latin parva baga, parva bagia (from 1389 in British sources).
English Law. Now historical.
An office of the common-law jurisdiction of the Court of Chancery, dealing with suits for and against the Lord Chancellor's staff, and with minor process and proceedings by recognizances, scire facias, or writs of extent on statutes, or to repeal letters patent, etc. Frequently attributive. Also: an officer of this court; = Clerk of the Petty Bag n. at clerk n. Compounds 2. See also petit bag n. at petit adj. and n. Compounds 1.
