Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French petun.
Etymology: < Middle French petun, petum (French (now French regional (western)) pétun, †pétum) the tobacco plant (c1555, although in early uses identified as an indigenous name), preparation of tobacco leaves (1598) < Guarani petỹ; compare Tupi petïma. Compare Portuguese petum (1566 as betum, 1587 as petume).
Now rare or historical.
The tobacco plant; (with distinguishing word) a variety of this. Also: a preparation of tobacco leaves.
