Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Phascogale.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Phascogale, genus name (apparently 1824 in C. J. Temminck Monogr. de mammalogie (1827) I. 56) < ancient Greek ϕάσκω- (in ϕάσκωλος leather bag, purse: of uncertain origin) + γαλῆ (uncontracted γαλέη ) weasel, marten, polecat, ferret (see galeopithecus n.). N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (fæskǫ·gălī) /fæˈskɒɡəliː/.

Zoology.

A genus of small, mouselike, insectivorous Australian marsupials of the family Dasyuridae; (also phascogale) a marsupial of this genus or of the subfamily Phascogalinae, a marsupial mouse.
