Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin phoenīceus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin phoenīceus bright red (Pliny; < ancient Greek ϕοινίκεος < ϕοινικ- , ϕοῖνιξ dark red (see Phoenician n. and adj.) + -εος, suffix forming adjectives) + -ous suffix. Compare Middle French, French †phenicé (1555). N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (fini·ʃiəs) /fiːˈnɪʃiːəs/.
Obsolete. rare.
Of a bright red or crimson colour.
