Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin phoenigmus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin phoenigmus irritation of the skin by rubefacients (5th cent. in medical writers), medicinal preparation causing reddening of the skin (1608) < Hellenistic Greek ϕοινιγμός < ancient Greek ϕοινίσσειν to redden ( < ϕοῖνιξ dark red: see Phoenician n. and adj.) + -μος, suffix forming nouns. Compare French phénigme, †phœnigme reddening of the skin caused by a mustard plaster (16th cent. in Paré).
Medicine. Obsolete.
A medicinal preparation causing reddening of the skin; a rubefacient.
