Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly; see e.g. physogastric adj.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Greek ϕυσο-, ϕῦσα.
Etymology: < Byzantine Greek ϕυσο-, combining form (in e.g. ϕυσόβαθρον stand for bellows) of ancient Greek ϕῦσα bellows, bladder, bubble (see physa n.). Compare post-classical Latin and scientific Latin physo- (1585 in physographia , apparently an isolated early example; in the 18th cent. in physometra physometra n. and Physophora Physophora n.), French physo- (16th cent. in Middle French in physocèle), German physo- (formations in which are found from at least the end of the 19th cent.).Earliest in the 18th cent. in physocele n. (after French) and in the Latin loan physometra n. A number of loans from scientific Latin are found in the 19th cent. The earliest new formation within English is apparently physostomous adj. Combining chiefly with second elements ultimately of Greek origin, but compare physograde n. and adj. with a second element ultimately of Latin origin.

physocarpous adj. [after scientific Latin physocarpus, specific epithet (see quot. 1858)] Botany Obsolete rare having swollen fruits.Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
