Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; partly modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin Pieris , -id suffix3.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Pieris, genus name (see Pieris n.) + -id suffix3. In later use after scientific Latin Pieridae, family name. Compare French piéride (1810), German Pieride (1876 or earlier). Compare slightly earlier Pierian adj. 2.

A butterfly of the large family Pieridae (formerly treated as the papilionid subfamily Pieridinae or Pierinae), the members of which are predominantly white, yellow, or orange with dark markings and include the whites, the brimstones, and the sulphurs.
