Etymology: < scientific Latin Pieris (see note) < classical Latin Pīeris a Muse < ancient Greek Πιερίς (usually in plural Πιερίδες ) < Πιερία Pieria (see Pierian adj.) + -ίς -id suffix2.In sense 1 adopted as a genus name by D. Don 1834, in Edinb. New Philos. Jrnl. 17 159. In sense 2 adopted (originally as the name of a family comprising the swallowtail and white butterflies, later adapted as a genus name) by F. von P. Schrank 1801, in Fauna Boica II. 152.
1. Botany. A genus of the family Ericaceae, comprising evergreen shrubs, small trees, and lianas native to eastern North America and Asia and bearing panicles or racemes of small, bell-shaped white flowers; (also pieris) a plant of this genus.
