Origin: A borrowing from a Cariban language.
Etymology: < a northern Cariban language (compare e.g. Macusi piai , Galibi piaye (A. Biet Voyage en Cayenne (1664) iii. 385)). Compare also earlier piache n.
Now rare (chiefly historical).
Among the indigenous peoples of Suriname and other parts of South America: a medicine man, a healer, a shaman. Cf. piaiman n., piache n.
