Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements. Etymons: phyco- comb. form, Greek ϕαιός , -in suffix1.
Etymology: < phyco- comb. form + ancient Greek ϕαιός dusky, brownish, grey (see phaeism n.) + -in suffix1. Compare earlier urophaein at uro- comb. form1 1(a).
Biochemistry. Now rare.
A brown colouring matter extracted from brown algae, originally thought to be a pigment in the living alga, but later identified as a product of oxidation in dead specimens.

1928 Bot. Gaz. 86 331 The material oxidized after death to produce the pigment phycophaein is a colorless chromogen in living cells.
