Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ϕυλακτήριος , -an suffix.
Etymology: < Byzantine Greek ϕυλακτήριος seller of amulets (recorded in the acts of the Council at Trullo in 692: see quot. 1625; < ancient Greek ϕυλακτήριον phylactery n.) + -an suffix. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (filæktiə·riăn) /fɪlækˈtɪərɪən/.
Obsolete. rare.
A person who wears or carries a phylactery.
