Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ϕύλλον , -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ϕύλλον leaf (see phyllo- comb. form) + -ite suffix1. In sense 2 after scientific Latin Phyllites, form-genus name for unidentified fossil leaves (1833 or earlier); compare French phyllithe (1869 in Littré, also phyllite ). In sense 3 after German Phyllit ( C. F. Naumann Lehrbuch der Geognosie (1849) I. 553; replacing French phyllade (A. Brongniart et al. 1813, in Jrnl. des mines 34 35).
1. Mineralogy. Any of various minerals resembling mica in appearance, esp. a variety of ottrelite or chloritoid. Now rare.

3. Geology. A fine-grained metamorphic rock with a well-developed schistosity, intermediate between slate and schist, having a shiny, often corrugated, cleavage surface and characterized by microcrystalline mica or chlorite arranged in parallel with the foliation.
