A form of entertainment in which a bear is trained and forced to dance, usually while tethered by a ring through the nose.Bear dancing was common throughout Europe and Asia from the Middle Ages onwards. It is still found in some regions, although is now widely regarded as a cruel practice. ΚΠ 1792 C. Dibdin Hannah Hewit I. ii. iii. 133 The major very justly observed that bear dancing was a funny recreative amusement, but bear baiting was cruel and not tolerated by act of parliament. 1861 M.
