Etymology: < classical Latin pīleus pileus n. + -o- connective + ancient Greek ῥίζα root (see rhizo- comb. form), after French piléorhize (A. Trécul 1846, in Ann. sci. nat. 5 342). Compare coleorhiza n. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (pəiliˌorəi·ză) /paɪliːəʊˈraɪzə/.
