Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Pleistoseiste.
Etymology: < German Pleistoseiste ( K. von Seebach Mitteldeutsche Erdbeben 6. März 1872 (1873) 181) < ancient Greek πλεῖστος most (see Pleistocene adj. and n.) + ancient Greek σειστός shaken < ancient Greek σείειν to shake (see seismic adj.; compare Byzantine Greek σειστής, literally ‘shaker’ (denoting a kind of earthquake)) + -τός, suffix forming verbal adjectives. Compare German pleistoseist, adjective (1873 in the same source).
Seismology.
A line on a map or diagram marking the limit of the area of maximum disturbance in an earthquake; the area itself. Frequently attributive.

1886 J. Milne Earthquakes i. 10 The isoseismic area in which the greatest disturbance has taken place is called the ‘meizoseismic area’. Seebach calls the lines enclosing this area ‘pleistoseists’.
