Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish pincho.
Etymology: < Spanish pincho thorn, spike (1783 or earlier), small snack served with an aperitif, consisting of fish or meat or other savoury food, usually on a small piece of bread, speared with a toothpick (1967) < pinchar to prick, puncture (1396), a blend of punchar , punzar to prick (see punch v.1) and picar (see pick v.1).With the form pintxo compare Basque pintxo (1976 or earlier; < Spanish) and (hence) the Spanish variant form pintxo (1995 or earlier). With sense 2 compare Spanish pincho moruno, literally ‘Moorish(-style) pincho’ (1962 or earlier), which is also sometimes used as a phrase in English contexts; compare:1972 Winnipeg Free Press 22 June 26/2 Other Spanish choices could be crab legs..or pincho moruno—marinated, skewered beef, lamb and pork.
