Etymology: < Spanish pincho thorn, spike (1783 or earlier), small snack served with an aperitif, consisting of fish or meat or other savoury food, usually on a small piece of bread, speared with a toothpick (1967) < pinchar to prick, puncture (1396), a blend of punchar , punzar to prick (see punch v.¹) and picar (see pick v.¹).With the form pintxo compare Basque pintxo (1976 or earlier; < Spanish) and (hence) the Spanish variant form pintxo (1995 or earlier).
