Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin pinguēscent-, pinguēscēns.
Etymology: < classical Latin pinguēscent-, pinguēscēns, present participle of pinguēscere to grow fat, to become oily or fatty < pinguis fat (see pinguid adj.) + -ēscere (see -escent suffix).
Now archaic and rare.
Becoming or growing fat; (in extended use) flourishing. Also of a food: greasy, fattening.
