单词 pipsissewa
释义

pipsissewan.

Brit. /pɪpˈsɪsᵻwə/, /pɪpˈsɪsᵻwɑː/, U.S. /pɪpˈsɪsəˌwɑ/
Forms: 1700s pipsiseva, 1800s phipsewa, 1800s phipsissiway, 1800s pipsewissa, 1800s pipsissaway, 1800s pipsisseway, 1800s pipsissiway, 1800s psiseva, 1800s sipsisewa, 1800s– pipsisewa, 1800s– pipsissewa, 1800s– pipsissiwa, 1900s– pipsissawa.
Origin: Perhaps a borrowing from Abenaki. Etymon: Abenaki kpi-pskwáhsawe.
Etymology: Perhaps < Eastern Abenaki kpi-pskwáhsawe < kpi of the woods + pskwáhsawe flower, assuming that the variants arose after the borrowing into English; but the fact that the earliest references are to eastern Pennsylvania are against this origin (as Abenaki belongs to the central coast of Maine). There is no support for either of the Cree etymons proposed by W. R. Gerard (1896, 1910).
A North American and Eurasian plant with trailing stems and whorls of evergreen leaves, Chimaphila umbellata (family Pyrolaceae; also called prince's pine). Formerly also: †a preparation of the leaves of this plant (or those of spotted wintergreen, C. maculata), used as a diuretic and astringent (obsolete).
