Origin: Probably formed within English, by conversion. Etymon: pin-hook adj.
Etymology: Probably < pin-hook adj. Compare pin-hooker n.A popular alternative theory derives the word < Pinhook, the name of a settlement in Robertson County, Kentucky (usually now known as Bratton's Mill), but this has not been substantiated.
Originally U.S. regional (south Midland). Now chiefly Horse Racing.
transitive. To buy (a commodity, originally tobacco) cheaply with the expectation of selling it later for a profit. Now: spec. to buy a very young racehorse cheaply for this purpose. Also intransitive. Cf. pinhooking n.
