Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek πλατειασμός.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek πλατειασμός a broad Doric pronunciation (as a Greek word in Quintilian) < πλατειάζειν to pronounce broadly ( < ancient Greek πλατεῖα , feminine of πλατύς broad: see plat adv.) + -μός, suffix forming nouns.
Obsolete.
The fault of opening the mouth too wide when speaking.
