Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek πληρωτικός.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek πληρωτικός filling up (Dioscorides), in Byzantine Greek also having or causing an excess of blood or other bodily fluid < ancient Greek -πλήρωτος that fills (only attested in compounds, e.g. ναρθηκοπλήρωτος filling a stalk of fennel; < πληροῦν to fill (see pleroma n.) + -τος , suffix forming verbal adjectives) + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare post-classical Latin plerotica (plural) medicines that restore the body (1758). With sense 1 compare earlier anaplerotic adj.
