Etymology: < French plessimètre ( P. A. Piorry Traité de la percussion médiate (1828) 14: see note) < ancient Greek πλήσσειν to strike ( < the same Indo-European base as flaw n.2) + French -mètre -meter comb. form2. Compare post-classical Latin plessimetrum (1829 or earlier).The instrument is also called pleximeter n., which word is attested in English slightly earlier; its first element ultimately derives from the same Greek verb.
