a. Originally: a small body of foot soldiers, detached from a larger body and operating as an organized unit, esp. to fire in volleys (now historical). Now: any of various subdivisions of a company of soldiers, esp. infantry; spec. one forming a tactical unit that is commanded by a subaltern or lieutenant and divided into three sections.
