Forms:

α. Middle English planisperie.

β. 1500s–1600s planispheare, 1500s– planisphere, 1600s planisphaer, 1600s planisphare.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Latin planisphaerium; French planisphère.
Etymology: In α. forms < post-classical Latin planisphaerium (see below); in β. forms < Middle French planisphère (1555) and its etymon post-classical Latin planisphaerium (1144 in the title of the Planisphærium attributed to Ptolemy, 1327 in a British source) < classical Latin plāni- plani- comb. form + sphaera sphere n. + -ium (see -y suffix4).The Planisphærium attributed to Ptolemy was translated by Hermann the Dalmatian from the Arabic ḵarīṭa saṭḥīya lidawā'ir al-burūj, literally ‘flat chart for the spheres of the constellations’, itself a translation by Maslama ben Ahmed al-Majrītī (d. 1007/8) of the lost original, entitled ἅπλωσις ἐπι ϕάνειας σϕαῖρας simplification of a spherical surface (the first word may be an error for ἐξάπλωσις unfolding) (Suidas).
A map, chart, or scale formed by the projection of a sphere, or part of one, on a plane; a representation of a hemisphere of the earth, the sky, or the solar system, on a flat surface, usually as a circle.spec. (a) a polar projection of half (or more) of the celestial sphere on to a plane surface, so that the equator and circles parallel to it appear as circles on the plane, esp. as used in a common form of astrolabe; (b) a flat device consisting of a polar projection of the whole of that part of the celestial sphere visible from a particular latitude, viewed through a movable cover with an elliptical opening that can be adjusted to show the part of the heavens visible at a given time of night and season of the year.
