Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French podagrie.
Etymology: < Middle French, French †podagrie gout (1571) < classical Latin podagr- , podager podagre adj. + Middle French -ie -y suffix3. Compare earlier podagra n., podagre n.1In sense 2 after post-classical Latin podagra (1538 in a British source as podagra lini ). The following example probably shows a variant of podagre n.1 with alteration of the ending rather than an earlier example of this word:?a1425 (?1373) Lelamour Herbal (1938) f. 59r That mylke and womanys mylke, to-gedir with savoray, puttiþ a-way the hote potogary.
