Etymology: Apparently < scientific Latin Podophthalmia (1835 in H. Milne-Edwards, or earlier), alteration (with suffix substitution: see -ia -ia suffix²) of Podophthalma Podophthalma n., perhaps after French Podophthalmiens, plural noun ( H. Milne-Edwards Hist. nat. des crustacés (1834) I. 237).

Zoology. Obsolete.

A former group of malacostracan crustaceans having the eyes at the ends of movable stalks, which comprised the orders Decapoda and Stomatopoda; (also podophthalmia) crustaceans of this group collectively.
