Origin: A borrowing from Russian. Etymons: Russian polovcy, polovtsy.
Etymology: < Russian polovcy (also transliterated polovtsy; 11th cent. as polovci in Old Russian), plural of polovec , perhaps < polovyj yellowish-white, pale ( < the same Indo-European base as fallow adj.1) + -ec, suffix forming nouns.The plural form Polovicii in quot. 1735 apparently ultimately reflects a Latin plural form.
With plural agreement. A nomadic Turkic people who inhabited the central Eurasian steppe between the 11th and 13th centuries.
