Etymology: < scientific Latin Polyadelphia, former class name ( Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (1735)) < poly- poly- comb. form + ancient Greek ἀδελϕός brother (see adelphous adj.) + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix1. Compare Monadelphia n.
Botany. Now historical.
In the Linnaean artificial system: the eighteenth class of plants, comprising those whose flowers have numerous stamens united by their filaments into three or more bundles.
