Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; partly modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Latin plumbum , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin plumbum lead (see plumb n.1) + -ic suffix, in sense 1 after French plombique (earliest in acide plombique : see below). In plumbic acid n. at Compounds after French acide plombique ( A.-L. Lavoisier Traité élém. de chimie (1789) I. ii. xvii. 181, the passage translated in quot. 1790 at sense 1).
1. Chemistry. Of, relating to, or containing lead, esp. in the tetravalent state. Cf. plumbous adj. 2.Recorded earliest in plumbic acid n. at Compounds.
