Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French porte.

Etymology: < Middle French, French porte court of the Ottoman sultan (1538; apparently 1432–3 with reference to the court of Murad II at Adrianople; also more fully la Sublime Porte (1748 or earlier)), any eastern court (1681), specific use of porte port n.³, ultimately after Ottoman Turkish bāb-i ʿālī ( < Arabic bāb gate + Persian -i, suffix connecting noun to its qualifier + Arabic ʿālī high, exalted; Turkish bâbıâlî), literally ‘high gate’, originally the name of the Grand Vizier's residence, applied in 1654 to the Grand Vizierate and subsequently to the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Interior, and of the offices of the Council of State; ‘gate’ was a reference to the ancient place of audience. The Western application of ‘Sublime Porte’ to the Ottoman government has been general, but its application to the Ottoman state answers rather to Turkish devlet-i ʿālīye ‘the sublime dynasty or state’. Compare Italian porta (1522 or earlier; also more fully la Sublime Porta).In the 17th and 18th centuries often erroneously taken as referring to the position of Constantinople as a seaport.
