单词 | pneumocystis |
释义 | Pneumocystisn. Medicine and Microbiology. A genus of parasitic microorganisms (originally thought to be protozoans, now recognized as fungi) found in the lungs of mammals; (also pneumocystis) an organism of this genus; infection with these organisms. Frequently attributive. Pneumocystis was originally considered to be a monospecific genus of protozoans. In the late 1980s it was reclassified as a genus of fungi (family Pneumocystidaceae), and more recently was recognized to consist of a number of closely related, often host-specific species. The name of the type species Pneumocystis carinii is now restricted to a form found only in rats, and the species commonly found in humans is known as P. jiroveci. The pneumonia in humans caused by this organism has also been called Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (abbreviated PCP).
