Etymology: Origin unknown.Compare Scottish Gaelic pab shag, flax refuse, woolly hair (perhaps related to Early Irish papp , popp shoot, tendril of a vine; apparently < classical Latin pampinus pampin n.). Compare bob n.1 Sc. National Dict. (1968) records the word as still in use in Banffshire in 1966.
Scottish.
Fibrous waste left over from the scutching of flax, or (in later use) jute; (more generally) any similar fibrous waste material. Formerly more fully pob tow.
