Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin acrasia; Greek ἀκρασία.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin acrasia intemperance (1546 or earlier) and its etymon ancient Greek ἀκρασία bad mixture, applied by Hippocrates to meats < ἄκρατος unmixed, untempered, intemperate ( < ἀ- a- prefix6 + κρα- , passive stem of κεραννύναι to mix (see crater n.) + -τος , suffix forming nouns) + -ία -ia suffix1. Compare acrasy n.In later use the results of (etymological and semantic) association with ancient Greek ἀκρασία akrasia n. are often evident: see especially quot. 1853.
Intemperance, excess (in early use personified); irregular or disorderly behaviour; = acrasy n.In later use only in dictionaries and glossaries.
