Etymology: < post-classical Latin polyanthea (see note) < ancient Greek πολυανθής blooming ( < πολυ- poly- comb. form + ἄνθος flower: see anthos n.) + classical Latin -a -a suffix1 1.Post-classical Latin polyanthea first appears as the title of a book of extracts from classical writers collated by Domenico Nani Mirabelli, Polyanthea, idest Florum multitudo (Savona, 1503); subsequently found in the titles of many similar works, such as the Polyanthea nova of J. Lange (Geneva, 1600).
Now rare (chiefly historical in later use).
A collection of quotations or extracts from literature, esp. poetry; a commonplace book; an anthology.
