Etymology: < scientific Latin polyanthus bearing many flowers (see polyanthus n.), bearing many flowers in one inflorescence ( E. J. Wachendorff Horti Ultraectini Index (1747) xix) + -ous suffix. Compare French polyanthe , adjective (1832 or earlier). Compare monanthous adj.
