Etymology: < scientific Latin Polycystina (or later Polycystinea), group name (C. G. Ehrenberg 1838, in Abhandl. der Königl. Akad. der Wissensch. zu Berlin 128) < poly- poly- comb. form + ancient Greek κύστις bladder (see cyst n.) + scientific Latin -ina (or -inea ): see -ine suffix2.

Originally: = radiolarian adj. (obsolete). Later: spec. of, relating to, or designating radiolarians of the class Polycystinea, whose central capsule surrounding the nucleus has many evenly spaced perforations.Ehrenberg appears to have used his ‘family’ name Polycystina as a synonym for the Radiolaria as a whole.
