Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: poly- comb. form, Greek νῆσος , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < poly- comb. form + ancient Greek νῆσος island (see nesidioblast n.) + -ic suffix, after French polynésique (1892 in the passage translated in quot. 1895). Compare slightly earlier insular sclerosis at insular adj. 3c, multiple sclerosis n. Compare also polynesia n.
Medicine. rare. Now historical.
Having a scattered distribution.

1895 tr. P. Marie Lect. Dis. Spinal Cord xiii. 141 The word ‘disseminated’ [Fr. en plaques] indicates that the islets are of small dimensions (inselförmige sklerose in German, insular sclerosis in English; polynesic sclerosis [Fr. sclérose polynésique] of some authors).
1998 A. Compston in A. Compston et al. McAlpine's Multiple Sclerosis (ed. 3) i. i. 4/1 Disseminated sclerosis soon became the accepted term..; according to Pierre Marie (1895), polynesic sclerosis was preferred by some authorities.
