Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: poly- comb. form, Greek -οπτρον.
Etymology: < poly- comb. form + ancient Greek -οπτρον (in e.g. κάτοπτρον mirror: see catoptric adj. and n.), naming instruments of sight. Compare earlier polyscope n.In form polyoptrum after Latin nouns in -um. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciations as (pǫliˌǫ·ptrǫ̆n) /pɒlɪˈɒptrən/ and (-ɒ̆m) /-əm/.
Obsolete. rare.
A lens that is plane on one side and has many concave facets cut into the other, multiplying the image of an object; a multiplying-glass. Cf. polyhedron n. 2, polyscope n. 1.

1842 W. T. Brande Dict. Sci., Lit. & Art 957/2 Polyoptron, a glass through which objects appear multiplied, but diminished. It consists of a lens one side of which is plane, but in the other are ground several spherical concavities.
