Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Pope Joan.
Etymology: < the name of Pope Joan, the legendary female pope once supposed to have reigned under the title of John VIII from 855 to 858. In fact, no more than a few weeks elapsed after the death of Leo IV in 855 before the election of his successor Benedict III. The historical Pope John VIII reigned 872–82. The legend is first recorded in French sources of the 13th cent.With sense 2 compare French nain jaune, lit. ‘yellow dwarf’, in the same sense (1838 or earlier).
