Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or perhaps (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: French popel ; Latin popia , -el suffix1.
Etymology: Either < Anglo-Norman popel (only in uncertain attestations: see quots. below), of unknown origin (perhaps < post-classical Latin popia ladle (see posnet n.) + Anglo-Norman -el -el suffix2), or perhaps directly < post-classical Latin popia + -el suffix1. Compare post-classical Latin poplus (1300 in a British source). Compare later popeler n., popard n., poper n.1It is unclear whether the following early examples are to be interpreted as showing the Anglo-Norman or the Middle English word:1299 in C. M. Woolgar Househ. Accts. Medieval Eng. (1992) I. 169 In poples et courlues xxiiii s.a1300 Glosses to De Nominibus Utensilium of Alexander Neckam (Caius 136) in T. Hunt Teaching & Learning in 13th-cent.
