Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish porrón.
Etymology: < Spanish porrón (19th cent. or earlier; 17th or 18th cent. denoting an earthenware vessel of some kind) < Catalan porró (15th cent., in its earliest use denoting a vessel for water) < porro leek ( < classical Latin porrum : see porret n.) + , diminutive suffix, the vessel being so called on account of its shape. Compare Occitan porre, pórro leek, porron, porron porron. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (poro·n) /poˈrron/.
In Spain and Spanish-speaking countries: a flask with a long spout from which the contents may be poured directly into the mouth.
