Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pompalis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin pompalis impressive, imposing (5th cent.) < classical Latin pompa pomp n.1 + -ālis -al suffix1. Compare Middle French pompal (1544). Compare earlier pompatic adj., pompatical adj., pompous adj.The passage in Tertullian referred to in quot. 1650 has not been identified. Tertullian apparently does not use Latin pompalis ; he does, however, use classical Latin pompāticus (see pompatic adj.).
Now rare.
Characterized by pomp; ceremonial, stately; splendid, showy.
